CHARACTER
Name: Vaati Ilmarien (surname not given in canon.)
Canon: The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
OU/AU: OU
Gender: Male
Age: 14
Birthday: November 3rd. This makes him a Scorpio, which is a personal headcanon of mine, based on these traits.
- Determined and forceful
- Powerful and passionate
- Secretive and obstinate
- Compulsive and obsessive
History: Links to his wiki pages can be found here and here! The canon point I've decided to pull him from is moments after he crossed through the Minish Door into the human world, so he is rather disorientated, and hasn't yet had the chance to become the person he would later end up as - that is, although he was selfish enough to steal the Wishing Cap, he now has the potential to become better than that, if he so chooses. Which is unlikely, given him.
Personality: If anything, Vaati's personality is full of contradictions. To the outsider- it's easy to be one with him, considering what a jerk he can be when he really wants to- he appears haughty and a little too obsessed with the idea of power. The haughtiness is somewhat of a defense mechanism, though- in reality, he is riddled by insecurities and doubts, but instead of choosing to sort them out, he puts up an imperious facade to hide the weaker parts of himself, and has done a damn good job of doing so, seeing as even his former mentor denounced him as a 'vile creature.' In fact, he has become so good at this act that he finds it harder by the day to differentiate between who he actually is, and who he tries a little too hard to be- that is, someone who does whatever the hell he wants and refuses to let anyone stand in his way. His supposed failure to live up to that ideal at all times haunts him, as his tendency to go to extremes means he often ends up hating himself over something little.
This is what originally lead to his fascination with the 'wickedness in the hearts of men'- despite what he may claim, he can be a very impressionable 14 year old boy, and found it was easier on him to be selfish rather than selfless and benevolent, after seeing others act selfishly with good results. He became fixated with the idea of magic, thinking that only if he was the 'most powerful sorcerer in the world', all his problems would be solved, and he'd never be looked down upon again- it was only natural that this would be the case for him, being a Minish, and an unusual looking one at that, meaning he would be an easy target for petty bullies. Vaati has a knack for twisting the truth so it suits him, meaning whatever slights against him that may have led to his current situation were definitely blown out of proportion, and as such he often justifies his actions to procure the Wishing Cap in shady ways.
But occasionally, there have been people who can see through his demeanour , and he acts rather differently around them- either with intensified scorn and spite, or extremely rarely, the person in question is allowed to see a slightly more vulnerable side to him, and may even become somewhat of a friend. It takes a lot for him to be honest, though. Again- he's very defensive!
Vaati does have his good points, though. He is intensely and fiercely independent, a boy determined to make his mark on the world- not someone who is easily stopped or broken. After all, he was cunning enough to steal the Wishing Cap, and already strong enough of a person to make such a powerful wish- after all, the strength of the wish depends on the strength of the person who makes it.
My personal headcanon that he is a Scorpio was mostly inspired by the quote below, which sums up perfectly how I view Vaati.
"Scorpio? Dark side? Bah humbug. You are a smouldering gothic creature and proud of it. If you are in denial about this you are in big trouble. Being awake for a thousand years gives you the edge over everybody else. Nobody nurses a grudge like you do, because you know revenge is a dish best served icy cold. Your poisonous sting is fatal, but lack of self-acceptance means you will use it on yourself one day and then the sky will darken, the mirror will crack, and your bones will turn to dust in a heartbeat.."

Abilities: Vaati is known as a 'Wind Mage', therefore his magical abilities centre around air- for example, he is proficient at conjuring up gales of wind, blasting objects and people out of his way, and even things such as teleporting. It is hinted in canon that he uses his magic to enhance his physical abilities- i.e, to win the swordfighting tournament at the Picori Festival. Despite this, he is naturally quickwitted with magic and fast in his movements, which also ties into his element of choice.
Best OR Worst Subject: His best subject would definitely be Transfiguration- canonically, he turned Princess Zelda to stone, took on the appearance of the King, and managed to conjure various monsters (even though he hasn't done those acts by the canon point I chose, he would definitely know how to.)
However, his powers are primarily air-based, and he is most proficient in them. I don't know where elemental magic would fall under in Hogwarts- but Vaati is a quick learner when he puts his mind to it, especially concerning magic.
His worst subject would most probably be Herbology - he is definitely not good with anything hands on unless it involves spellwork, but stubborn enough to keep attempting something he knows he's awful at, if only to prove he can conquer it and emerge victorious.
Requested House: Slytherin. Or even Ravenclaw, at a push.
Anything Else?: I think it would be interesting to see him thrown out of his element, to see how his personality would develop- this is a major reason why I chose the particular canon point I did.

Why couldn't he just make this spell work?
It wasn't like he'd had any problem with magic back in Hyrule. In fact, it wasn't like he even had any problem with magic here, either. He'd picked up on the way it worked fast enough to mean he was in the 4th year (the year he was meant to be in, instead of being lumped in with the little kids) and he'd already impressed his classmates and teachers with ease.
But this one spell......
"Aguamenti!"
Ah. Nothing. Not one jet of water burst forth from his wand, not even one that could hit that irritating 7th year boy in front of him who kept chuckling at his failed attempts to cast the charm.
Keep laughing, idiot.
Perhaps he couldn't do it because it was a 6th year spell, according to the book laid out in front of him? Or maybe it was because he was a wind mage, and the Aguamenti Charm was water based. He'd never given a lot of thought to water elemental spells before, that was true. He found them rather boring compared to the air magic he was used to.
He tried again, pronouncing the incantation clearer this time- after all, it was to produce a clear jet of water- but still, it had no effect. His wand did start glowing slightly, though.
This is ridiculous. He slammed the book shut and stood up, yawning slightly in what he thought was a bored manner. It was well past the time he had to return to his common room by, but it wasn't exactly like he'd cared about that before. Vaati sauntered out the library, making an effort to bump into the 7th year as he walked by.
I swear to the goddesses, if I ever manage to get the hang of that damn charm, he is the first person who's going to get the full blast of it.
In fact, I'm going to learn it just for him.
2.I have an action-tag thread sample here! I also have a prose thread here- please note, however, that it originates from an AU, therefore Vaati's personality is not exactly as I have described it above. It's a good example of my writing style however!
